The World's Corporate Mail Box Service
The World offers a Corporate Mail Box service for companies who wish
to have their own Internet domain name for delivery of business mail
to a World mailbox.
An Internet domain name is a "host" address which mail can be
addressed to. For example, the domain name for Software Tool & Die is
std.com. With the Corporate Mail Box service your own domain name,
usually indicating your company's name, can be used for delivery of
mail to a regular World mail box. Your mail will be received in your
World account mail box even though you have a new, distinct Internet
domain name.
For example, the engineer Jane Smith who works for the company Acme
Software Engineers is using the World account jsmith with the mail
address jsmith@world.std.com. After establishing a Corporate Mail Box
ase.com she may receive mail via the Corporate Mail Box to the address
jsmith@ase.com: World will know jsmith@ase.com is an alias for
jsmith@world.std.com.
Additionally, a Corporate Mail Box can point at one or more World mail
boxes. For example, support@ase.com might expand to
jsmith@world.std.com and bclinton@world.std.com: They would each
receive a copy of any mail sent to the support address.
The domain name (e.g. ase.com) must be unique over the whole Internet.
You can try names yourself on World by querying the Network
Information Center host database in Chantilly, VA with the command:
world% nicname ase.com
If this returns "No match for ASE.COM" (or whatever name you tried)
then it's probably available (it's remotely possible someone has just
sent them a form applying for that name and it's not in their database
yet.)
If the name you want is already in use be creative or ask the staff
for suggestions. Also, the name is limited to twelve characters and we
would suggest keeping it even shorter for your customers' convenience.
The World's Corporate Mail Box service only supports two-part names
(e.g. ase.com is OK, but not frodo.ase.com).
Note that .com means "commercial", a business. There are other choices
for non-profits (.org) etc. If you aren't a commercial business then
ask the staff for advice on which ending to use, the rules can be
confusing.
To establish a Corporate Mail Box, the enclosed form must be completed
and returned to Software Tool & Die with a $25 registration fee. Your
Corporate Mail Box application is then sent to the Network Information
Center (NIC). When we receive the approved application from the NIC
the Corporate Mail Box will be configured. The NIC can take from 2-4
weeks to process an application.
The Corporate Mail Box costs $75 per year paid in advance.
